Wild swimming on a hot summer’s day in the water meadows at Newbridge

Swimming in the Thames on a summer afternoon is a delight. While Londoners can keep their expanse of dull and frankly murky river, here in Oxfordshire we have the delight of blissfully unspoilt pools and lush water meadows. There are a plethora of wonderful hidden spots to enjoy, but one of my favourites is at Newbridge. Here there are two lovely pubs, some excellent walks, and, of course, swimming to refresh you at the end of a hot summer’s day.

A few minutes’ walk upstream will lead you to several points where you can chuck your clothes beneath a tree and climb down into the water. You’ll see the clouds scudding overhead, families of ducks floating gently by, and hearty waves from passing boats. After your swim, the Rose Revived and the Maybush Inn are but a short walk away for a warming drink.

Newbridge lies between Standlake and Kingston Bagpuize on the A415. Parking is possible at both the Maybush and the Rose Revived (provided you pop in for a drink afterwards) and swimming is just a short walk from there!
